Penang Badminton Association Centennial Celebration Ambassador, Datuk Lee Chong Wei
April 9, 2025The oldest state badminton association in Malaysia — Penang Badminton Association, will celebrate its 100th anniversary on Saturday, November 22, at the SPICE Arena. A series of exciting programs will be held to welcome the centenary celebration, including a grand dinner that evening, inviting heavyweights in the badminton world to attend, creating a star-studded night!
The history of Penang Badminton Association can be traced back to the British colonial period, when British officers, especially those of the East India Company, introduced badminton to Malaya at the time. Badminton quickly became popular among the British expatriate community and locals.
Soon, the first badminton club, Penang Badminton Club, was established in 1880, marking the official entry of badminton into Malayan society.
In the early 20th century, the British promoted badminton through church schools, especially in Penang, Malacca, Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.
In 1925, Penang became the first state to establish a state badminton association and became one of the earliest badminton organizations in the country. The main goal was to promote and develop badminton in the local community. This included organizing competitions, providing facilities for players and creating a competitive environment that encouraged the growth of the sport.
The establishment of the Penang Badminton Association also contributed to the wider development of badminton in Malaya (now Malaysia) as it set a precedent for other states and regions to establish similar associations, laying the foundation for national-level organization and management.
In 1934, the Malayan Badminton Association was established, which became the predecessor of the current Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM).
The early initiatives and efforts of the Penang Badminton Association laid a lasting foundation in the history of badminton in Malaysia as it helped to develop talents, organize competitions and build infrastructure to support the development and popularization of the sport over the years.
All members of the Penang Badminton Association are now united in their efforts to prepare for the celebrations and welcome the arrival of the 100th anniversary with glory, so that Penang can shine on the international stage!
